There are two Red Lion hotels in England that are known for some of their strange occurrences in the local community. When it comes to haunted pubs, England has more than its fair share.
At the Red Lion Hotel, located in Colchester, Essex, England, there are two different ghosts haunting the premises. The first is a young girl named Alice Mellor who has chosen her haunting grounds within the kitchen area. She is reportedly so frightening that the owner had her old room sealed up in the hopes that she would not reappear. The second ghost is a monk, who lost his life in a local fire centuries ago.
In Wiltshire, England, there is the Red Lion Avebury, which is believed to possess a haunted visitor. The hotel is set inside an ancient stone circle and is over 400 years old.
The story goes that a jealous husband returning from the English Civil War, discovered his wife Flori had fallen in love with another man. In a fit of rage, he threw his wife down a deep well. Today, the well is covered with glass, but the ghost still makes her presence known.
This legend haunts the Red Lion Hotel, with several customers and employees seeing Flori, dressed in black, walking around the pub in search of her husband.
One eyewitness saw her appear with a bearded man, who they believe was her husband. Customers have also seen Flori in the ladies toilets and a previous pub landlady said the ghost of Flori hurled salt and pepper over tables and chairs. “Flori” has also been known to bother bearded customers and spin chandeliers around. Glasses are thrown about, the cigarette machine cries puddles of water, and the juke box turns itself on and off. Ghostly horse-drawn carriages have been seen pulling up outside the pub, which dates back to the 16th century.
