In 1981, the rumor of a woman with her mouth slit from corner to corner started circulating in Japan. You have to know that in japan, it's not unusual to see people walking around wearing surgical masks everywhere. People wear surgical masks to be polite when they have a cold or during allergy season. So in the story, this woman wears a mask and nobody notices her slit mouth.
The slit mouth woman, called Kuchisake-onna in Japanese, was mutilated by her husband and almost killed. Because of that trauma, she went crazy and is bent on mutilating and killing her victims. Kuchisake-onna corners children and sometimes college students when the sun starts going down and asks them "Do you think I'm beautiful?" When they answer yes or no, she takes off her mask and chases them down and slits open their mouths and murders them.
According to the legend, there are a few things you can do to prevent your mouth being slit open. One thing is not to give her a yes or no answer. Just say something like "You're about average" and she won't know what to do, so she'll leave you alone. My favorite slit- mouth- lady- prevention- method is saying the word "Bryllcreem" three times in a row.
